Classic rock Protest song makes long-form comeback
Tom McNamee, The Chicago Sun-Times

Protest songs are so 1968, but a seething new song by singer-songwriter James McMurtry, "We Can't Make It Here," is getting regular airplay on WXRT (93.1 FM). Listeners can't hear it enough.

"I can honestly say we have received more calls either asking who that was or saying 'that was really great' than any song we're playing right now, including songs by superstars like Cold Play and U2," said Lin Brehmer, morning drive DJ on WXRT. "It's extremely angry. It's not correct in any political or polite way. It has obviously chimed a chord in people's minds."

WXRT may be the only radio station in the country playing the song regularly. The song is long -- 7 minutes and 5 second on the CD -- and includes an obscene word. To make it work for radio, Brehmer, working with production director Jason Dildine, shaved the song down to 5oe minutes and eliminated the four-letter word. They left the song's power untouched.
