Concert Photo Spotlight @thenational at Civic Opera House on Dec. 13, 2017 Photos + Story by @laurie.fane “Chicago's Civic Opera House is typically home to the powerful vocalists of Lyric Opera. On Dec. 13, 2017, the historic venue was graced with a performance by one of the best live rock bands of today, The National. I was lucky to be there covering the concert for Eponymous Review. In support of their Grammy Award-winning album, Sleep Well Beast, The National absorbed every ounce of the auditorium's ambiance only to release it back out to the audience with exponential beauty. Matt Berninger – not the opera house's traditional baritone – alternated between delicate whispers and guttural screams as the brothers Dessner created utterly unique compositions and the Devendorfs shared steady rhythms on songs like “Turtleneck,” “Apartment Story,” “Guilty Party” and more. Photographing at the opera house was a bit of a challenge as photographers were restricted to the venue's perimeter, but the distant vantage point provided an opportunity to take in all the magic. Once my camera was put away, I reveled in the experience becoming more immersed in musical wonder as the show went on. As the encore ended with the heartbreaking Cherry Tree tune, “About Today,” I fought back tears. It was the type of show that makes you turn to a stranger just to say, “Wow.” Follow Laurie online: lauriefanelli.com IG: @laurie.fane Twitter: @Lauriefanelli . #thenational #concertphotography #musicphotography #civicoperahouse #concert #mattberninger #singer #spotlight
Thirty years ago, The Highwaymen embarked on their first tour, which started out in Houston and came to the Rosemont Horizon just a few days later. For just $20.00 you could see Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. That comes out to only $5.00 per legend! They’d just released their second album and over the course of two hours the supergroup ensemble played many of the songs from both records. They also performed hits from each one of their own careers, with Willie doing “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” and “Always on My Mind.” Johnny sang “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Ring of Fire,” and Waylon brought out “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” plus “Good Hearted Woman.” When Kris started singing “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” Johnny stopped what he was doing, pulled out a camera and started snapping pictures. Waylon joined Kris in a duet of “Sunday Morning Coming Down.” Years later, in a review of these live performances, Rolling Stone Magazine said, “Jennings sings with a devilish swagger; Kristofferson, never the most pristine of vocalists, commands with steely determination; Nelson delivers his unconventional quaver; and Cash holds it all together with an imposing gravitas. The performances crackle.” The Chicago Tribune summed things up by calling the band, “Country music’s equivalent of Mt. Rushmore.” . #thehighwaymen #rosemonthorizon #tickettuesdsy #ticketstub #90s #90smusic #country #rock #johnnycash #willienelson #waylonjennings #kriskristofferson
Since 2009, December has been the most anticipated time of the year for @andrewbirdmusic’s Chicago fanbase. That year, inspired by his childhood memories of performing Handel’s Messiah in church, he chose downtown’s Fourth Presbyterian Church as the setting for a multi-night residency entitled the Gezelligheid Concerts. At the time Bird stated, "What I hope to do with these shows is adapt my music completely to the atmosphere of the space and the season. The music will be mostly original instrumentals using my voice only to intone. I want the audience to be both lifted and comforted as we head into another cold and dark winter. I feel the space should be sacred so the audience can experience my music in a different atmosphere." Those performances were unlike anything else in the city and the exceptionally favorable reception from fans served as a springboard for Bird to renew the residency nearly every December since. In much the same way Chicagoans treasure their annual outing to see “A Christmas Carol” or the “Nutcracker,” a whole new generation of fans eagerly look forward to the Gezelligheid concerts. This month, Andrew Bird will reprise his annual Gezelligheid concerts with a live stream performance on Sunday, December 13th at 6:00 pm CT. The stream will be available to watch through the month of December. Tickets can be accessed here: https://bit.ly/3lO1LOD Included with each ticket is an archival stream of the 2013 Gezelligheid performance, live from the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, that will be available to view on or before the live stream on December 13th. 📸: Jesse Lirola . #andrewbird #gezelligheid #fourthpresbyterianchurch #livrstream #holidays #onsalenow #nutcracker #achristmascarol #chicago #chicagomusic
