After three albums, five EPs, 15 years, and countless shows, CURRENTS don’t just embrace a collective urge to evolve; they follow it without flinching.
The Connecticut band—Brian Wille [vocals], Chris Wiseman [guitar], Ryan Castaldi [guitar], Matt Young [drums], and Christian Pulgarin [bass]—chart a fresh course on their fourth full-length LP and Rise Records debut, Our Fates Lie In Tandem. Never forgetting where they came from, their detuned riffs will still induce moshing on command, and the frontman’s screams could crack concrete. However, the sound and vision have organically expanded with bolder melodies, multi-dimensional production, and unapologetically emotional subject matter.
Harnessing the electricity of progress, they undeniably level up.
“There’s some social commentary and a little bit of heartbreak too, but I disregarded the notion that I might hurt anybody with my words,” says Wille. “I brought the wall down, so I could be more personal than ever before. Our Fates Lie In Tandem is not heavy for the sake of being heavy either. We agreed a track doesn’t need to be ‘a walking breakdown’ in order to make an impact. So, you’re getting the lows, the highs, and everything in between. There’s a reason for each element and meaning behind every word.”
Such intention has always driven CURRENTS. Formed in 2011, the lineup crystallized with the addition of Wille on the microphone in 2015. The quintet made a deeper mark with each successive release, tracing an impressive arc across The Place I Feel Safest [2017], I Let The Devil In EP [2018], The Way It Ends [2020], The Death We Seek [2023], and All That Follows [2025]. Their catalog eclipsed half-a-billion streams fueled by staples such as “Better Days,” “Remember Me,” “Let Me Leave,” “Monsters,” and “Kill The Ache,” among others. Not to mention, the guys sold out headline tours and supported the likes of Motionless In White, Ice Nine Kills, and Parkway Drive. Receiving acclaim, Distorted Sound raved, “CURRENTS are one of those bands that you feel a primal urge to tell people about,” and Everything Is Noise attested, “they are the standard for quality modern metalcore.” New Noise Magazine went as far as to christen them, “one of the sickest bands out there right now, throwing down guttural dark and deep plunges into the abyss of our hearts and minds.”
Over the course of 2026, the guys recorded what would become Our Fates Lie In Tandem. Wiseman handled recording as the producer in addition to writing the music. From there, Currents catalyzed the spark he ignited.
“We put extra effort toward improving the sound without altering our core,” notes the vocalist. “The songs are both more cohesive and dramatic. You can’t repeatedly do the same thing, yet you can make what you do better.”
The first single “Retributioner” embodies the spirit of natural reinvention. Echoes of ethereal guitar ripple across a glassy soundscape held together tightly with a taut beat. Feeling overflows from the haunting hook punctuated by Wille’s high register. Holding nothing back, he laments, “You just stand there smiling…While this fire I hold consumes me.”
“It was effective to juxtapose the softer, somber delivery with aggressive yelling,” he states. “‘Retributioner’ is about righteousness and how society forces people who are doing the right thing to be as dark and twisted as the world around them is. You’re doing everything right, but the world is telling you to darken yourself to get where you need to be. It’s saying, ‘Be assertive, take what’s yours, and do what has to be done at all costs’.”
Frenetic keys reconfigure, recombine, and morph into a precisely picked anxious arpeggio on “Lost.” Pummeling percussion picks up the pace, and he wonders, “How could I ever be whole again? You only love me when you’re lost.”
“It’s definitely metal, but ‘Lost’ has some pop-punk energy too,” he observes. “People do things when it works for them in a relationship. When it doesn’t work for them, they simply leave the situation. It’s normalized and accepted to defend the nature of selfishness and apply it to romance.”
Then, there’s “Eyes For Eyes.” It teeters on an axis of unabashed lyrical vulnerability and focused sonic bludgeoning. All of its momentum swells beneath the chugging undertow of an ominous refrain, “Eyes for eyes, anything to keep this to your chest.”
“The song is our twist on the concept of ‘An Eye for an Eye’ from the perspective of a dark spirit who always gets its way,” he elaborates. “The song leans into stories like Death Note, Hellraiser, or Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow and the idea of a vengeful ghost or ‘devil-for-hire,’ so to speak. By summoning the spirit, you enter into its contract. It does your budding in exchange for your soul, punishing you for the damage it caused in your name. It supports one of the record’s overall themes: evil has its consequences.”
Like the calm before the storm, the vocals barely break a whisper during the verses of the standout “Absence.” Breaking up a haze of airy electronics and deconstructed strings, a rush of distortion uplifts the chorus as he cries out, “Will we accept the fall? The absence of all life.”
“‘Absence’ summarizes the album’s vision,” he goes on. “We play around a lot with the concept there is some ‘Big Bad’ who is pulling all of the strings. It asks, ‘Do we accept the absence of all light?’ Even though we discuss the horrors of the world, you don’t just blindly succumb to them. Music should be a place we all go together for solace.”
Ultimately, the title Our Fates Lie In Tandem speaks to the unity within CURRENTS and encouraged through their artistry. It’s a bold statement.
“Our Fates Lie In Tandem is a call-to-action that we’re all in this together—as a band and as a community,” he leaves off. “We worked our asses off, we put as much of ourselves into the music as we could, and we stayed true to who we are. Now, we’re going to attack the world with the album as hard as we can.”
